Girrrl Power: Water Fai – Girls in the White Dream

It seems these days that I rely on Post-Rock and Math Rock for kicks. In the male-dominated world of Post-Rock, who would’ve thought that 4 girls (and a dude) from Osaka, Japan can seriously kick ass. Water Fai is inspired by Pele, Pixies, Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, and Animal Collective so it’s no surprise that their mix of psych-pop and post-rock melodies can be oh-so-addicting.

Released in 2006 and re-released in the US by White Shoe Records last March 2008; Girls in the White Dream is divided into 8 songs with a running time of 50 minutes. Yes friends, it’s Post-Rock at it’s finest. This is no kawaii party; Girls in the White Dream is filled with melodic songs mixed with Engrish that everyone seems to love. Yes, Engrish.

It’s kind of comforting that they’re not playing songs which would later appear on Anime Shows. I have nothing against Anime; it’s the cosplay-ing fans that kill me.

Kinsella-esque: The Six Parts Seven – Things Shaped In Passing.

And we’re back with the awesome Kinsella-esque series. Today, we’ll take a look at a band which was recommended to me by my good friends. The Six Parts Seven have been around since 1995 and they’ve got 5 studio albums already under their belt.

Things Shaped in Passing, the band’s 3rd release, is actually the first album that I heard from this awesome band. Let me say this upfront, Things Shaped In Passing moved me. Sure it’s post-rock and all the post-rock elements are there, but I think The Six Parts Seven really gets the swooping, epic-feel of post-rock. Sure, it’s long and it’s boring; but beyond that is a whopping 41 minutes of roaring emotions expressed through instruments.

So, yeah. Position your pillows beneath your bed and fight back those evil tears.

Summer Reading List: Graphic Novels
April 24, 2008, 2:27 am

You know how schools in the States set up Summer Reading Lists or whatever? Well, I figured that I should set up my own summer reading list just for kicks. But I’m not gonna slave myself by reading a big-ass novel, no sir! I’ll stick to my graphic novels as of now (but I will read a couple of books later on). Artwork + People talking through balloons = Anti-boredom.

I still haven’t figured out when I would read these, but I have copies of them already. So yeah!

1. Manix Abrera’s Kikomachine #4: O kaligayahang walang hanggan, yeh!

I just a fresh copy of this little baby yesterday while walking around ATC with the bro’s. I think it’s a required reading for all UP Students because the humor primarily revolves around the UP System. The first one was actually really really good, the second one was a bit political, the third one was good and I still haven’t opened #4. But I bet that it’ll be awesome. Kikomachine never fails to make me laugh.

2. Adrian Tomine’s Optic Nerve (#1-11)

Finally got my hands on the three collected works of Adrian Tomine (orignally published as Optic Nerve): Sleepwalk and other stories, Summer Blonde, and Shortcomings. Optic Nerve is basically a collection of stories of different people from different walks of life. But basically, they’re just emo and really talkative. Mumblecore, perhaps?

3. Daniel Clowes’ Ghost World

Yep, it’s the Graphic Novel that started the critically-acclaimed movie which starred a really angry Thora Birch and a less-glamorous version of Scarlett Johansson. It’s basically about Enid and Becca, two teenagers who roam around their town and bitch about people, music, television and well the good ‘ole American Culture. Teen issues at it’s finest.

4. Garth Ennis/Darick Robertson’s The Boys (ongoing)

The Boys is one hell of a comic; there’s blood, guts, and protruding nipples on every issue. The series is set in a contemporary world very much similar to real one, with one notable exception: a number of people have some form of superpower. The series follows a superpowered CIA squad, known informally as “The Boys”, whose job it is to keep watch on superheroes and, if necessary, intimidate or kill them (wikied). The fun thing about this comic? Besides the blood, guts, and boobs; the supes in the series are sometimes strikingly similar to other comic book heroes out there. E.g. Tek-Knight, a supe who can’t stop fucking (fruits, children, animals) is a cross between Iron Man and Batman.

5. Bryan Lee O’ Malley’s Scott Pilgrim (#1-3)

Scott Pilgrim is hilarious. This Manga-inspired graphic novel (which comes out once a year) is about Scott Pilgrim who is on a quest to battle with his new girlfriend’s Seven Evil Ex-Boyfriends. The characters are awesome, the references are epic, the humor is so out there, and Michael Cera will star in the film adaptation which would be directed by Edgar Wright. I mean, come on! Scott Pilgrim is a great great read. I wouldn’t mind reading this all over again this summer (I still have to get #4! Sputnik’s sold out!)

So yeah. I still have a few books to read after I get through this list. Some non-graphic novels to have a little variety.

Up the spout – Juno B-sides: Almost Adopted Songs

We all know that Juno is one fucking awesome movie. One of the best things about the movie is the film’s soundtrack. Not only is it hip, it’s also a good collection of songs that somehow guided the film throughout it’s entire run. The first soundtrack shot up to the Number One spot of different charts and what-have-yous so I’m not surprised that they’re releasing a second soundtrack full of B-sides.

Juno B-sides: Almost Adopted Songs compiles mostly what wasn’t included in the first soundtrack. It’s still on the same level as the first one and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. I think the reason why you should be hitting the link below should be Ellen Page’s awesome song which was cut from the movie. “Zub Zub” was written by Diablo Cody and it just basically talks about Juno’s “chair encounter” with Bleeker. It’s short, but it’s sweet. Furthermore, there’s a version of the 20th Century Fox Fanfare by Kimya Dawson; hella funny.

Oh well, you know what to do.

Okay, so I was loitering around the Munsci Forums and I found this really really interesting thread that point out just how evil THE MAN is.

TOPIC TITLE: Alumni’s are BANNED from entering the school

Yeap you read right, a few days ago our beloved principal “ordered” our, oh, i mean, their guards to refuse entry ALUMNI students of MSHS, since they are NOT a PART of the school anymore. Most of those who can attest to this are a part of the MSHS basketball team, batch 04, 07, and 08. We were sent packing like dogs. When questioned, the MSHS principal said that this alumni ban has been in full effect since long ago (exact words ay: MATAGAL NANG BAWAL ANG MGA GRUMADUATE DITO! KAYO LANG ANG NAG PUPUMILIT NA PUMASOK NG PUMASOK DITO! MAG SI LABAS KAYO! BAWAL KAYO DITO! DI NA KAYO TAGA DITO!) with a trademarked throaty shout. Now, no bad intention, just comparisons, (I am voicing out the concerns of the whole body involved, namely the alumni sent out) why are other alumni allowed entry? And just for kicks, while the beloved principal was having a meeting just outside the IV Pascal room (Batch 08′) there were volleyball players from Tunasan who didn’t even study in MSHS who were PLAYING and SHOUTING at the top of their lungs right in front of the room where our principal is situated. And when we came inside (the same people who were sent out) THE GUARDS SENT US OUT. Do you think this is reasonable? What is your opinion on this matter. Please keep the thread clean, no flamebaits, we are the victims here.

What’s my opinion regarding this matter? Hmm… I’ll keep it a bit short:

You can keep your fucking school and shove it up your huge ass.

Honestly, I don’t give a flying fuck because I totally stopped going to Munsci about a year ago. But then again, there are these invitations from friends which I seriously don’t want to miss. So I go to Munsci because of THE COMPANY and not THE SCHOOL itself. I don’t return there just to brag, because let’s be honest I don’t have anything to brag about anyway.

But what a lovely way to treat the students which are representing your school in prestigious colleges like U.P., Ateneo, and well… La Salle. What a lovely way to treat the working citizens of the country that came from a school like Muntinlupa Science High School. Yes, this is how they treat their alumnus, they kick them out of the school like dogs.

Here’s to “never looking back” to that wonderful institution.

So, to all the awesome graduates from Munsci, don’t bother going back there. I mean, THE MAN and the man’s huge ass is kicking people out of the place. Oh, I guess HER DAUGHTER won’t be allowed to enter the premises also since she graduated from Munsci. Furthermore, they won’t admit the EX-MAYOR’S SON and his band of bodyguards, too.

Enough 420! Let’s talk about the EARTH.

See, I was so caught up with the 420 hoopla that I forgot that it’s also Earth Day. Because I just finished taking a course on the principles of Ecology, I just love the Earth. I mean, totally love it. Not hippy love, but something like I-only-have-you-so-I-love-you kind of love. Because let’s admit it, once the Earth is gone, we’re pretty much fucked up.

So, as that phony-ass “documentary” from GMA7 is airing with the so-called “Greenpeace advocate” Richard Guttierez hosting it; I’d like to point out something that they probably WOULD NOT talk about in that “documentary” of theirs.

I mean, sure they’re talking with IRRI and all that shit, but did they ever bother us, the geeks of the Philippines on what we think could solve GLOBAL WARMING? NO! They just stick with the scientists and all that hoopla shit. Well, Channel 7 you don’t need Richard Guttierez to host a “special documentary” on the effects and solution to Global Warming…

I believe that the true solution could be found on this image below: (more…)

She looks so delighted with that big fat joint of hers.

I’ve been bumming around here (Ciciboy’s place) since yesterday, just watching old skool B-movies, our latest Mumblecore find: Quiet City, some indie features here and there. And thank god we’ve already started prepping up for our big first feature. As of now we’ve mapped out some character descriptions and some backgrounds and some plotlines here and there.

Oh, and we’ve got conversations galore.

Yeah, I’m pretty much excited about this project. It’s like the biggest thing that would happen to me all summer. Awesomeness abounds, mofo!
